Like my ancestors—

drinking leaded water,

living on labor and bootleg—

my body resists happiness.

 

Doctors blame my behavior—never named,

so never changed—

for the anemia, failing kidneys,

the miscarriages.

 

I carry four generations of blood—

and everything hurts.
